On March 11th, the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. Since then, the federal government has taken steps to provide relief to both employees and employers from the effects of the Coronavirus. Congress has expanded FMLA Leave, required emergency paid sick leave, increased unemployment benefits, and offered loans to businesses to discourage layoffs. Employers need to be aware of these new laws, and existing laws (the ADA, OSHA, WARN) that also must be considered when dealing with the consequences of the Coronavirus.
